People seem to think that when they adopt a new dog or cat and bring it home that it’s going to be like a Hallmark movie, and they will fit in right away! Sometimes they do; sometimes they don’t! One of the hardest things is seeing a dog or cat be adopted and so happy to go home and then one or two days later, they are brought back because that animal “wasn’t what we expected” or “didn’t fit in.” It can take up to three months for them to feel like they are home! That’s why it’s so important … [Read more...] about Giving Your New Pet Time to Adjust

October is National Adopt a Shelter Dog Month
October is National Adopt a Shelter Dog Month and while we believe every month has that title, special attention is given to October in hopes that all of these beautiful souls will find their forever homes. Most pets are brought to us and other humane societies through no fault of their own. The top reasons stated for surrendering animals are “landlord issues” and “moving.” This means there are a lot of amazing, fun, loving dogs here ready to go home and have a second chance at life. There … [Read more...] about October is National Adopt a Shelter Dog Month

Keeping Pets Safe in the Home and Garden
Our homes, gardens and yards are full of items that can be potentially hazardous to our furry family members and, as they are part of our family, it is our responsibility to help keep them safe. Little things laying around like coins, batteries, jewelry, paper clips, rubber bands, buttons, string and more, seem harmless to us but they could become a choking hazard to your pets. Plastic grocery bags can easily become a hazard to curious cats who love to climb in them and play. I can’t tell you … [Read more...] about Keeping Pets Safe in the Home and Garden
Recognizing the Importance of National Lost Pet Prevention Month
July is “National Lost Pet Prevention Month” and a great time to remind you of a few ways to keep your pets safe and at home! Yavapai Humane Society’s Lost & Found Department can be a very busy place. Depending on the season, especially if there is a holiday or bad weather, they can take in anywhere from five to 10 lost animals per day. In May alone, we were able to reunite 57 animals with their families! The National Humane Society states that a family pet is lost every two seconds in … [Read more...] about Recognizing the Importance of National Lost Pet Prevention Month
Caring for Pets in the Dog (and Cat) Days of Summer
Summer in Arizona is extremely hot, and heat can be a canine killer. As our temperatures rise, we need to take extra precautions to keep our four-legged family members safe. If it’s 77 degrees outside, the temperature of the pavement is 125 degrees and at 87 degrees, the temperature of the pavement is a whopping 143 degrees! An egg can fry at 131 degrees in just five minutes, so just imagine how your dog’s paws feel walking on the hot cement, rocks or even dirt. Before you take your pets … [Read more...] about Caring for Pets in the Dog (and Cat) Days of Summer
Staying Healthy Together
We all strive to do whatever it takes to keep ourselves healthy. This includes regular checkups, and this is equally important for our furry family members, too. An annual wellness exam is the best way for your veterinarian to perform a variety of health screenings, which can potentially show early signs of a serious illness or disease. This is also a good opportunity to get the preventative medications your pets may need, like heartworm and/or flea and tick medication. In addition, dental … [Read more...] about Staying Healthy Together
Getting Outdoors with Your Dog
It’s April and time to put a little spring in your step! Grab a leash and your four-legged best friend and hit some of the many dog-friendly trails in Prescott. It’s the perfect time to start a new exercise routine together, because April is National Canine Fitness Month. Make sure your dog has a clean bill of health from your veterinarian to prevent any injuries and avoid any issues that might arise from exercising. Getting proper physical stimulation helps dogs keep their muscles and joints … [Read more...] about Getting Outdoors with Your Dog
Ready For a Walk?
Do you sometimes feel that taking your dog out for a walk is more of a chore than an enjoyment? In all honesty, I can say that, for me, sometimes it does feel that way. Waking up early, piling on warm clothes and boots and having to go out is not my idea of a good time, especially if it’s snowing or raining. The funny thing is that once I get out there and start walking with my girl, I almost immediately have an “attitude adjustment” and start to get a little pep in my step and enjoy my time … [Read more...] about Ready For a Walk?
