Navajo Code Talker Wants to Go Home for Christmas
Dan Akee, one of the last Navajo Code Talkers, wants to go home for Christmas. The house that he built in the 1960s has been vacant and uninhabitable for years. When Red Feather Development Group of Flagstaff learned of the war hero’s wish, they set out to do something about it. “All I want to do before I die is live in the house I built with my own hands 60 years ago,” Dan Akee, 94, said to his son Danny, one of his caretakers. “When my father was in the hospital, he wasn’t praying for … [Read more...] about Navajo Code Talker Wants to Go Home for Christmas
Plant Your Christmas Tree After the Holiday
Using living trees over fresh-cut trees to decorate the holidays has increased in popularity. More than half of my local Christmas tree sales are for living trees that will be planted in January. Because of their waxy needles and high internal pitch, most conifers need surprisingly little water. This is true for the high country natives like pine, cypress, cedar and juniper. Once these trees reach their mature sizes, they thrive in our arid climate, dry soil and extreme mountain … [Read more...] about Plant Your Christmas Tree After the Holiday

Living Small Brings Big Benefits
Marc Authier decided to downsize to a simpler life that would allow more time to relate to himself and to other people. Sharon Petz decided she wanted to pursue minimalist living and spend more time in nature. Both of these individuals have built Tiny Houses to accommodate their needs for simplicity and minimalism. Tiny Houses are part of a national movement that advocates living simply in a building that is 400 square feet or less, although many Tiny Houses are much smaller than that. Quad Cities Residents Recommending Transportation Improvements
Arizona Department of Transportation officials say economic benefits and quality of life in Arizona are intrinsically linked to transportation improvements and transportation infrastructure expansion. But, they say, Arizona is falling behind in maintaining and expanding its transportation routes. “We are being hurt financially because we haven’t kept up,” said ADOT Deputy Director for Policy Floyd Roehrich during a community meeting at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. Roehrich’s … [Read more...] about Quad Cities Residents Recommending Transportation Improvements
Fortune Finds Opportunity in Mobile Bridal Suite
It happened to her one too many times. Fortune Brandel, a stylist who specializes in weddings, found herself at a venue with two electric outlets and two hours to prepare 10 bridesmaids for a wedding. There had to be a better way. She thought it over and began looking for a trailer with floor space and a kitchen that she could take with her to any venue. Now, the bride and her bridesmaids can spend the hours leading up to the wedding in a beautiful, luxurious, ultra feminine space … [Read more...] about Fortune Finds Opportunity in Mobile Bridal Suite
Shared Space Trending in Business
Sharing toys and playing well with others are values people learn in kindergarten that stick for life. For example, two of the main things Kristen Densmore loved while enrolled in art classes at Prescott College and the Savannah College of Art and Design in Georgia were having access to all the equipment and a collaborative community. The Milagro Arts Center, located just off the square in downtown Prescott, is building on these concepts. Their shared studios will soon become an adult art … [Read more...] about Shared Space Trending in Business
Making Music in His Corner of the World
It may seem as though John’s Corner Music Shop is new. It is not. It’s been around for at least eight years, but it moved few years ago and it is a little hard to find. If a person is looking for a brick and mortar music shop on a corner of a street, it won’t be found. The business is inside the Back Street Indoor Flea Market on Second Street. “It looks new. It seems new, but we’ve been here for a long time. It has been remodeled here recently,” said its owner, John Hale. Hale first … [Read more...] about Making Music in His Corner of the World
