If you are like many folks, breakfast is the most important meal of the day. The nutrition in your breakfast choices helps maintain blood glucose levels and your metabolism. We are encouraged as a society to not skip breakfast. Whether you make a healthy breakfast bowl, smoothie, oatmeal with yogurt or whatever you desire, you will likely get the nutrients your body needs. Then comes lunch, the middle meal. Many local restaurants begin serving lunch around 11 a.m. I have many peers in … [Read more...] about Preparing for the Meal in the Middle

Choosing Healthy Foods for Times of Grief
I am writing this article to help assist and be present for some of the most amazing people in my community. Recent announcements of some of the most sad and unwelcoming news can hit us hard. Whether it’s the death or a tragic diagnosis of illness of a friend, family or neighbor, food can be used as comfort in many healthy and unhealthy ways. We have heard of folks reaching out for quick comfort foods, alcohol and even drugs to assist with coping with sadness, grief and trauma. However, what … [Read more...] about Choosing Healthy Foods for Times of Grief
Considering Food for Self-Care
When you hear the term “self-care,” what comes to mind? For many years, I have thought that self-care involved getting a massage, receiving a luxurious facial, hiking in our beautiful forests, attending a fancy retreat, enjoying a relaxing bubble bath, reading a good book and listening to jazz music with some lit candles. Through the years, I have found that self-care was holding my grandsons and rocking them to sleep after story time. I became an herbalist in 2017 and learned about the … [Read more...] about Considering Food for Self-Care
How to Avoid Feeling Overstressed, Overworked
I sit here chuckling as I consider to how to: be a better wife, mother, daughter; run our two businesses; balance my volunteer hours; plan time for exercising, meal preparation, playing with my grandsons, praying and honoring God, staying on top of social media, writing out Christmas cards, shopping locally for gifts, recognizing and praise my staff and spreading holiday cheer. That list doesn’t even include time for my own reflection and well-being. I became overwhelmed with exhaustion and … [Read more...] about How to Avoid Feeling Overstressed, Overworked
Making Holiday Meals Special
Celebrating the holidays with family and friends is a special time of year. I can recall so many food memories. We would also have calamari. We would go to the local Jewel [grocery store] and order several pounds of the fresh squid. Sitting alongside her and cleaning it was fun. Then we breaded it and fried … [Read more...] about Making Holiday Meals Special
Serving Meals in a Bowl
During our most recent participation in the Empty Bowls 2019 soup event on the beautiful downtown Prescott square, we were surrounded by community as well as beautiful and unique bowls. Guests looked forward to having their bowls filled with yummy soups that were prepared by local chefs and restaurants. For as long as I can remember, our family has served food in bowls during mealtime, not just soup, chilis and stews, but also full meals and salads. During the fall and winter months, I love … [Read more...] about Serving Meals in a Bowl
Meal Planning for Healthy Living
As a caterer and culinary specialist, we take the time to plan out menus on a weekly and monthly basis. We have catering menus that show our offerings. But what happens when it’s the end of the day, the kitchen closes and you are hungry? Believe it or not, that happens far more often than one could imagine. Every day, I am surrounded with amazing fresh food in our commercial kitchen. My husband, Richard, reminds me to place an order for a family meal to take home. Wouldn’t it be great to bring … [Read more...] about Meal Planning for Healthy Living
