Prescott Area Pet Emergency Hospital (PAPEH), the first dedicated emergency and critical care facility for companion animals in Northern Arizona, is celebrating one year of service and is inviting the public to its Birthday Celebration, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday, May 3, at the emergency hospital located at 2245 East Highway 69 in Prescott.
The celebration will include cake and treats for both people and pets, as well as a raffle, free engraved pet tags, and other give-away items. The staff will be visiting with pets and their families who have used the hospital’s services in the past, or offer tours of the facility and answer questions from those who are first-time visitors.
“In recognition of this milestone, and in appreciation for the support PAPEH has received from the Yavapai County veterinarians and the communities PAPEH serves, we’d like to invite our past and future customers to join in the celebration,” said Hospital Director Dr. Scott Reed.
Until the opening of this practice, pets with medical or surgical emergencies that occurred outside their primary veterinarian’s regular business hours had to rely on the availability of an on-call veterinarian or drive nearly 100 miles to Phoenix for the closest available emergency and critical care veterinary hospital. Such delays too often made it impractical or impossible for some patients to receive the care they needed and many pets succumbed to their injuries or illnesses before arriving at the facility.
PAPEH first opened on Saturday, April 19, 2013, offering emergency and critical care services on the weekends from 5 p.m. on Friday until 8:30 a.m. on Monday and 24-hour service on major holidays. In September 2013, in response to increased need, hours were expanded to also include Monday through Thursday weeknights from 5 p.m. to 8:30 a.m. Staffing has also increased to accommodate the caseload. In the year since PAPEH first opened, emergency services have been offered to approximately 2,500 pets from Prescott, Prescott Valley, Chino Valley, Dewey-Humboldt, and Kirkland, as well as the Verde Valley.
