In anticipation of significant growth in aviation and industry safety disciplines, Embry-Riddle Prescott students will have the opportunity to become leaders in safety and organizational effectiveness with the new bachelor’s of science degree program in Industrial Psychology and Safety, an update of the bachelor’s degree program in Safety Science that launched in 2012.
Focused on understanding human behavior and thought in workplace settings, the Industrial Psychology and Safety program is a blend of theory and practice, giving students the skills and knowledge necessary for careers in aviation, human resources and occupational safety/organizational training.
Safety Science Department Chair Dr. Erin Bowen is excited by the new emphasis on industrial and organizational psychology while connecting it to existing departmental expertise in safety. “Safety truly is not something that happens ‘by accident.’ We know from research and practice that psychological methods and strategies for training, assessing organizational culture, selecting and evaluating personnel and collecting and presenting information will improve safety and enhance organizational performance,” she said.
The flexible curriculum allows students to concentrate on their individual interests in safety and psychology, such as aviation safety, organizational culture/behavior and occupational safety. Students will also have access to advanced laboratories and equipment, including an accident investigation lab and an ergonomics lab with a motion-measurement system, as well as access to flight simulators and other aviation equipment.
