Prescott and Yavapai County are well known throughout the United States as retirement communities. In fact, Money Magazine in recent years called Prescott “One of the Top 5 Places to Retire.” AARP Arizona is certainly aware of that image. But AARP also is aware that the traditional view of retirement is no longer what it was when the organization was founded in California in 1958 as the American Association of Retired Persons. In fact, that four-word descriptor is no longer used. Instead, … [Read more...] about AARP Increasing Activities in Yavapai County

When Bad People Happen to Good Jobs
My mom once told me, “Nature’s laws are God’s laws, and they must be followed.” In her wisdom, she recognized the need to respect and adhere to the forces that aren’t going to change one iota – like gravity. One of my favorites is balance. This Law of Nature is demonstrated everywhere in the Universe: day and night, hills and valleys, good and evil, push and pull, plain and peanut. If there’s a depression, like a wash in the desert, at some point, it will fill with water. That’s just how it … [Read more...] about When Bad People Happen to Good Jobs
Are You Hiding in the Conference Room with Noise-Canceling Headphones?
Walking through a building of scientists one day, I noticed a sign taped to a door that reminded me of a handmade “Keep Out” message hanging from a child’s treehouse. The words said something about “Writing Time” and “Please Do Not Disturb.” At first glance, the sign felt harsh and almost rude, but then I realized the archaeologists behind the closed door were trying to set boundaries and carve out some uninterrupted space where they could think and document their research. I noticed I was … [Read more...] about Are You Hiding in the Conference Room with Noise-Canceling Headphones?
Comparing Costs for Private Pilot Training
Leighnor Aircraft spent Feb. 7-9, at the Copperstate Fly-in at the Buckeye Municipal Airport. This fly-in was a great time for general aviation. There were a lot of visitors and we stayed very busy on Friday and Saturday talking to people about flight training and our amazing Aeroprakt aircraft, for which we are now the Southwest dealer for sales and support. As is the case with most of these events, Sunday tapered off toward the afternoon and many people and vendors headed for home. If you’re … [Read more...] about Comparing Costs for Private Pilot Training
Capturing the Big Moments
The images captured by professional photographer Tracy Fultz reflect the heart and soul of the artist behind the lens as much as the people in front of it. “Photography is a vessel to share happiness,” said Fultz, owner of Blushing Cactus Photography in Prescott. “It’s about building relationships and being a part of meaningful moments in the lives of others. I love capturing human emotion and telling stories through my photos.” Fearing for her life in an abusive relationship in Tennessee … [Read more...] about Capturing the Big Moments
Over the Moon with Soft Skills
Jessica Watkins is a 31-year-old, unassuming, small-framed geologist with an easy smile and former member of a Division I national champion rugby team. She is many things, including an astronaut-in-training, but she’s not a pilot…yet. When NASA selected her from a field of 1,800 applicants to be one of 13 individuals being trained for possible space travel to destinations like the Moon and Mars, how well she could handle a jet did not top the list of preferred competencies. She was chosen for … [Read more...] about Over the Moon with Soft Skills
Pronghorn Ranch Subdivision Developing in Prescott Valley
Two parcels of land on the east and the northeast boundaries of Pronghorn Ranch Parkway have been approved by the Prescott Valley Town Council for a 189-lot housing subdivision. That approval came in late December when town officials reported that decisions regarding traffic control had been resolved. By a 6-0 vote, with one council member absent, approval was given to the subdivision, which will be called Antelope Park. The amended final plat will permit 189 homes, split on to two pieces … [Read more...] about Pronghorn Ranch Subdivision Developing in Prescott Valley

Empowering Tribes with Clean Energy
Arizona is blessed with an abundance of sun and the resulting solar power it can generate if properly harnessed. Perhaps nowhere is this more true than on the open landscapes of the Hopi Reservation and the Navajo Nation. Suzanne Singer, a member of the Navajo tribe who grew up in Flagstaff, has a background in mechanical engineering and energy analysis and is uniquely qualified to lead an effort to develop energy independence in tribal communities in Northern Arizona and across the … [Read more...] about Empowering Tribes with Clean Energy
Winfield at the Ranch Preparing for Residents
Marketing itself as “Prescott’s premier luxury apartment community,” Winfield at the Ranch is nearing competition. Pre-leasing is to begin this month, with new residents expected to begin moving in around March 1. Luxury may be the germane term for the apartments, for they are being built on what was once the site of one of the wealthiest quartz ore gold mines in Central Arizona. Located on the eastern edge of Prescott and nestled on the south side of Bullwhacker Hill, the site was famous … [Read more...] about Winfield at the Ranch Preparing for Residents
